Insulation Systems - Tennis

MCCORMACK-NAGELSEN TENNIS CENTER COLLEGE OF WILLIAM AND MARY, WILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIA

THE CHALLENGE
To work as a sub-consultant for the interior tennis area finish-out of a collegiate tennis center. The facility, sited in historically and architecturally significant colonial Williamsburg, required a compatible exterior design. The new site for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) Women’s Tennis Hall of Fame, the interior needed to exceed all industry standards for indoor tennis as well as incorporate energy-efficient lighting and insulation systems. The lighting system had to be glare-free, uniform, and designed for championship level play.

THE SOLUTION
Working with a local architect, general contractor, and specialty consultants, ICA approached the building design from the inside out to maximize the playing environment.

Baseline and sideline views were incorporated into the design to provide spectators circulation that is unmatched in collegiate facilities. All necessary amenities for the tennis operation were provided on the main level and situating the ITA’s Women’s Tennis Hall of Fame on the second.

Championship level Caindle Indirect Lighting was selected for court lighting. The fixture layout provides the best lighting of any collegiate facility built prior to 1996. Additionally, the Caindle’s hinged design streamlines cleaning and maintenance.

An Energy Miser ceiling system was installed to provide high thermal performance in the air-conditioned building, and to provide superior light reflectivity for the indirect lighting system. Professional grade backdrop curtains, netting, and padding completed the indoor court layout and also provided court privacy, ball control, court access, and safety.

THE RESULT
The award-winning tennis center opened for play in 1996 and serves as a permanent home to the ITA Women’s Tennis Hall of Fame and the nationally ranked William & Mary Tribe Tennis teams. McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center was the recipient of the following awards: USTA/Mid-Atlantic Section Facility of the Year 1998; U.S. Tennis Court & Track Builders Association’s (USTC&TBA) Outstanding Tennis Facility 1996; and USTA Outstanding Tennis Facility 1995.
