Funding for Energy Saving Upgrades
Yikes! Ouch! Wow! Or insert the expletive used after opening your clubs last
utility bill. It doesn’t matter if you own a small, medium or large facility -
use natural gas, heating oil or electricity; the whole country has been hit
hard with soaring energy costs.
Whether you consider it to be from natural disasters, unseasonably cold weather
or supply and demand, they’re all contributing factors to the rise in rates.
Lowering the thermostat a few degrees will save some money, but you don’t want
your members to be uncomfortable. Another way to combat rising costs is
creating a more energy efficient facility. Installing additional insulation and
reducing the number of light fixtures can save from 40% to 65% in annual
utility costs.
But, you ask yourself if you can afford the initial cost of upgrading the
building. There may be help if you’re willing to do a little footwork. Some
utility companies have distribution funds or rebates available to customers
that create a more energy efficient space, therefore reducing demand. The small
amount of time spent to inquire with your local utility company may reap big
savings.
A case in point, ICA recently contracted to do work at a club in Maine. Work we
wouldn’t have gotten if the club owner hadn’t done his research. The utility
company for this particular location is funding 55% of the $90,000.00 scope of
work. And this doesn’t include the savings the club will incur annually from
lower utility bills.
Here’s a link to help start your search for savings. Note: If your utility
company isn’t listed here most have customer service numbers noted on your
bill.
