HANGAR RENOVATION - MANKATO MUNICIPAL AIRPORT, MANKANTO, MINNESOTA

The Challenge
The Mankato Municipal Airport, located 80 miles southeast of Minneapolis-St. Paul, is one of the busiest municipal airports in the state of Minnesota – a state that is well known for its cold winters. To increase the comfort of ground and maintenance crews during winter months, insulation was deemed necessary. Daily operations, however, could not be interrupted or impacted in any way by the installation.

The Solution
The Energy Miser® Insulated Ceiling & Wall System was selected to insulate the hangar, which included a 10,000 square-foot ceiling, and 6,500 square feet of walls and a hangar door. The ceiling was insulated with 9-inch R-32.9 Energy Miser® insulation. To ensure optimal thermal performance, the existing skylights were covered. A 6-inch R-21.9 was installed on the walls, two gable areas and the swing-up hangar door.

The Result
Mankato Municipal Airport now has an energy efficient, comfortable and more visually appealing environment in which to house its maintenance and storage operations. The project was completed during the peak of winter. In fact, at 50% completion, employees noted a marked improvement in the temperature inside the hangar. The installation was phased over three weeks, and completed without interruption to critical facility operations, on time and within budget. A comparison of utility bills from last winter to the present reveals significant savings on utility bills as well.
